Steven Smith out of IPL with wrist injury in 2016

Australian captain Steve Smith withdrew Monday from the Indian Premier League with a wrist injury and to return home for treatment prior to travel to the Caribbean.

Cricket Australia doctor Alex Kountouris said Smith suffered from pain in his right wrist last week.

"We have worked with his IPL franchise Pune to check this, and unfortunately it is not resolved," Kountouris said in a statement.

"As such, he will go home to return from India for further assessment and treatment prior to the trip to the Caribbean.

"He stressed the injury does not seem serious, "but we are eager him time to recover and restore before you to indicate the end of May to the Caribbean.

"Australia begins tri-series in Guyana, 6 June against South Africa before returning hosts four days later at the same place.

The round-robin tournament will see teams of three games play every opponent with the two best move for the final on June 26 in Barbados.

Smith decision comes a day after the Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh from the rest of the IPL drawn with a side strain.
